The Class of ’57 is coming from across Canada and the United States for its 60th reunion, with dinner on May 25 at the Cowichan Golf and Country Club and brunch May 26 at the Guide Hall.
This year 62 attendees, including spouses, will be at the dinner and 50 at the brunch. Most of the attendees still live on Vancouver Island but many are scattered throughout Canada and the U.S. The grad coming from the furthest away is Shirley (Helin) Chenoweth from Santa Clara, California.
In June of 1957, 72 students graduated from Cowichan High School, which is now Cowichan Senior Secondary. At that ceremony Principal Col. R Lendrum stated that 48 per cent of the original numbers did not graduate. Therefore, down through the years, our many reunions and yearly luncheons include classmates as well as grads.
The reunion committee of Michael Hanson, Gwyneth (Vaughan- Jones) King, Wendy (Hindmarch) Keserich, Doreen (Young) Peet and Irene (Webb) Deschene have been busy since the fall with preparations. Sadly, in March, another valued committee member, Joan (Fitt) Bulcock passed away.
This group have always been good citizens during their school years and throughout their adult lives. As the Class of ’57 they started a fund to purchase bleachers for the gym, planted the willow tree in the front of the school and they donated the totem pole, and later restored it, which stands in the entrance of CSSS.
