The Terry Fox run has been a fixture in the Lake Cowichan community for 26 years.

Since 1990, Lake Cowichan runners have helped to contribute to the more than $750 million raised worldwide in Fox’s name and it is hoped the tradition will continue.

This year, however, there is no volunteer run organizer in place and staff at the Terry Fox Foundation are reaching out to the community in the hopes of finding one.

“It would be such a shame for the people of Lake Cowichan to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry’s legacy alive as every community, no matter how big or small can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned in 1980 when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000,” said Donna White, provincial director for the Terry Fox Foundation’s B.C. and Yukon branch.

“The Terry Fox Foundation funds research in all kinds of cancer, believing as Terry did, that we need to conquer this disease once and for all,” she said.

The volunteer run organizer is responsible for recruiting committee members, confirming the route, promoting the run and overseeing run day activities. It’s estimated to take about two to four hours a week during the months leading up to the big day, which this year is on Sept. 17.

“Whether as a couple or individual, the volunteer run organizer(s) will always be assisted by the Terry Fox Foundation in the planning process, and given the resources to make it a success,” White said.

For more information about the race organizer position, or to volunteer email Donna White Donna.white@terryfoxrun.org or call 1-888-836-9786.
