Brentwood College students stage Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Brilliant, witty play offers students great chance to explore characters.

Brentwood College students recently performed the off-Broadway award winning play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile by the very funny Steve Martin.

Director Susan Quinton said she had been hoping for years to stage this play and this time, everything came together for success.

The novel concept, she explained, sees “an idealistic, undiscovered, 25-year-old Einstein and a deeply romantic young Picasso meet at a bar in Paris in 1904 just before they changed the face of art and science in the 20th century.

“This is by no means a standard stage play. There is no clear protagonist and the characters do not change in any drastic way from beginning to end. The fourth wall is broken and then built again with such rapidity that it will leave your head spinning. In short, it reads like one long Saturday Night Live sketch.”
