Buying artwork by Chemainus artist Diana Durrand supports a daily breakfast program that provides Chemainus elementary students with their most important meal of the day.

Durrand is the first local artist to participate in a social initiative called Buy Art Feed Kids, recently launched by Sunshine Coast artist Dana Caple. At BuyArtFeedKids.com visitors can view and purchase online works by Durrand and nine other artists. According to the group, 40 per cent of the purchase price will help feed kids in the artist's community, an equal amount will go to the artist, and 20 per cent will be used to cover administrative costs.

The Chemainus Community Schools Association runs a daily free breakfast program providing meals, because they say "hungry kids can't learn" and Island Health has reported that the Cowichan Valley has one of the highest child poverty rates in B.C.

If you want your contribution to stay in Chemainus, visit the BAFK's online gallery of Gallus Domesticus (chicken) exhibit. These works have been exhibited in Victoria and the Cowichan Valley. You can also call Durrand and view the prints in her Chemainus studio. Call 250-210-0921 to arrange a viewing.
