With one severe winter storm behind us and another one the way, the Cowichan Valley Regional District is reminding citizens to be prepared.
For those at risk of flooding, sandbags are available at Bings Creek Recycling Centre on Drinkwater Road, Peerless Road Recycling Centre on Westdowne Road in Ladysmith, and at the Meade Creek Recycling Centre on Youbou Road in Lake Cowichan.
Sand and sandbags are also available across the road from the North Cowichan Works Yard on Sprott Road. All locations are accessible 24/7.
In anticipation of more rain and flooding, the Canadian Forces have deployed a team of 30 members to the area.
“Canadian Forces members will be on the ground in the most impacted communities of the region to support sandbagging and preparedness for the upcoming week of weather,” said a press released issued by the CVRD.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Red Cross is providing $2,000 per household to flood victims who meet the eligibility requirements.
To access the supports, evacuated British Columbians need to register with the Red Cross by calling 1-800-863-6582, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. or visit the Cowichan Community Centre on Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Government of B.C. is also providing Disaster Financial Assistance to help families repair homes and property from the effects of flood damage. For information, eligibility and to submit an application can be found on the Emergency Management BC webpage.
