Attempted robbery in Chemainus

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are looking for information after an attempted robbery at the Chemainus Village Liquor Store on Boxing Day.

Around 8 p.m., a lone man walked into the store carrying a large knife, with a plastic bag over his head. He went behind the counter and demanded that the clerk open the cash drawer. The clerk responded that the drawer could not be opened on demand, and the suspect fled the scene on foot while the clerk sought safety in the rear of the store.

All the suspect managed to take was a can of beer that was sitting close to the checkout area.

"This was a violent crime that has left people shaken. Our detachment is still actively investigating and are looking for the publics assistance in identifying the man responsible," said Sgt. Chris Swain.

The suspect is described as about five-foot-10 with long dirty blond hair. He was wearing a green long-sleeve shirt, black pants, and white shoes with a black stripe near the toe.

Anyone with information should contact the local RCMP at 250-748-5522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
