Out for a walk on Tuesday, Cowichan Bay area director Lori Iannidinardo found a handful of used fireworks.

With the fire situation across the province, it’s cause for worry.

“Reports of people lighting off fireworks in the Lambourn area has given some residents a few sleepless nights,” she said in a Facebook post. “I am hoping this has stopped.”

One neighbour heard a bunch of fireworks a few nights ago that she figures were leftover from Canada Day as it’s been quiet since that night.

Iannidinardo hopes she’s right.

“Besides the disruption to wildlife and domestic and farm animals the extreme fire danger is very concerning,” said the director.

Cowichan Bay fire chief Charlie Brown said his department hasn’t received any complaints.

“We haven’t had a complaint because I would have gone and investigated but there is a total ban on fireworks at this time,” said the chief. “That’s been on since last month when the catagory 2 ban came on.”

At this point in the dry season, effectively all open burning, campfires included, is prohibited until the risk is deemed over.
