Police were sent to Cowichan Secondary School on Friday morning after anonymous threats were made on social media.

The school sent out a notice to parents Friday morning stating that Cowichan Secondary was open, but had activated its Violence Threat Risk Assessment protocol, which includes consultation with the provincial Safer Schools Together team and the RCMP.

“Although the threat was assessed as low-level, the safety of our students is our top priority and the school district takes any potential threat extremely seriously,” the notice said.

“Out of an abundance of caution, there will be an RCMP presence at the school throughout the day. The school district would also like to ask parents to remind their children that engaging in any threat making behaviour, even as a prank, can have serious disciplinary consequences that may include criminal charges.”

Cpl. Tammy Douglas, a spokeswoman for the RCMP, acknowledged that the police are aware of threats that were made on social media.

“There is nothing to indicate that these threats are credible,” she said.

“We are investigating and take threats of this nature very seriously. In consultation with the principal, and out of an abundance of caution, we will have uniformed officers remain at the school today.”

The school and the community has been tense since Dec. 4 after several apparently pre-arranged fights broke out off-site between groups of students.
