Shawnigan Lake RCMP are reminding businesses to be on the alert after a number of counterfeit $100 U.S. bills have been spotted in the area.

“Businesses are reminded that if you are unable to confirm the authenticity of the currency, then do not accept it,” Cpl. Greg Pask said.

The Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce advised member businesses this week that two counterfeit U.S. bills had been passed in Mill Bay on Sunday, July 10.

Anyone who believes they have accepted a counterfeit bill is required to report it to the nearest detachment. Police are investigating the situation to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

Information on counterfeit currency can be found on the RCMP website at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/count-contre/index-eng.htm
