It’s been eight weeks since three Great Danes were stolen from their rural home in Cold Lake Alberta and those searching for the missing pets believe they may be on Vancouver Island, particularly in the Nanaimo and Cowichan areas.

The Nanaimo RCMP is following up on one possible sighting at Collier Dam Park.

“The caller said a male, no description provided, was seen walking a Great Dane and it appeared to resemble one of her stolen dogs. The caller said when the person walking the dog was asked about it, they quickly turned and walked away,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien in a press release.

According to Karen McLaren, a Langley-based dog enthusiast helping spread the word, “now there are reports of one of the fawns in the Cowichan Valley area.”

The dog spotted in Nanaimo may have been “Sheldon” a two-and-a-half-year-old brindle (brownish/tawny-coloured) male.

Two fawn-coloured dogs, Sherlock, aged four, and eight-year-old Honey Bee are also missing; one of them may have been the one spotted around Cowichan.

All three dogs are microchipped.

“If you think you have seen any one of these three, please call the RCMP immediately,” McLaren said. “Licence plate number of a vehicle, photos of the people and dog(s) would be helpful, but do not put yourself in harm’s way by approaching anyone. These dogs have been gone for eight weeks. Let’s get them home to their family.”

Those with information on the thefts or possible sightings of any of the three dogs are encouraged to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
