Muriel Roberta Eaton (née Hastings), 88, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, June 15, 2017 surrounded by her family.

Mom married the love of her life, Harry, in Vancouver on September 24, 1949. They moved to the island where they raised a family of five: Don (Sheila), Brian (Maxine), David (Shelley), Bruce (Lorraine), Brenda (Stan) and friend and former daughter-in-law Joan Milne. She leaves behind many grandchildren: Kevin, Shannon (Brandon), Karen (Dan), Cheryl (Ray), Steven (Julianna), Jill, Josh (Lory), Melissa (Jeremy), and Scott; great-grandchildren Ryan, Taylor, Curtis (Brooke), Cameron, Chase, Chad, Caleb, Kai, Amelia, Paige, Emily, Madden, Levi, River, Sadie, Marlee, Ellise, Lizzie and great-great-granddaughter Ava.

Mom was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Harry, son Brian, brother Bob Hastings, sister Betty and her husband Fred Masterman, and Gladys Thomas. She is survived by sister Pauline Douglas, and fondly remembered by Jean Hastings and her children Shirley, Linda, Dawn, Diana and Jim, Lynn Crowther and brother Jim Masterman, Connie Iisko, Barb and Connie Thomas, Sue Thomas, Jean Cliffe and Margaret Barter from England, and cousin Frank and Carol Hastings.

Muriel and Harry joined the Eagles about 50 years ago. Mom catered, and was very active for many years with the Eagles. She was most proud of the many friends and fellow members who contributed their time and efforts to the community, including good friends Jean Cameron and Marian Tipping, along with so many others. She was a past President and Treasurer over the years. She spoke so fondly of those times. Mom had so many dear friends, especially in Silver Park, that it is almost impossible to name them all.

Mom was born in Comox BC on August 6, 1928 and grew up in a large extended family in Fanny Bay. It was there that she introduced her 4, soon to be 5, young children to clams, oysters and melted butter cooked over a fire on the beach, and long warm and wonderful summers of swimming and exploring while dad worked “early shift” in Cooper Canyon Camp. This proved to be the start of a tapestry of adventures and memories that will reside with her family for the rest of our lives. These memories are so rich and honest in their detail and seem to come unbidden to mind when we least expect them. Mom and Dad taught us much about the importance of the way we live and the value of what we believe to be good and honest in our lives. They taught us these universal ideas, mostly by example. We had only to observe the everyday life at home to realize what was right and what was wrong. They always said “If something was worth doing, it was worth doing right”.

Mom and Dad, your family and friends will always remember you with love and fondness. Although the memories may fade a little over time, the love that you immersed us in, will always remain firmly in our hearts and in our minds. Love you always, Mom and Dad.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in the Chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 375 Brae Road, Duncan. A reception will follow at the Mom’s home, catered by the Duncan Eagles, Ladies Auxiliary.
