Following a brief illness, Rex died at Cowichan District Hospital on Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 at the age of 94. In his final days he displayed the humour, intelligence, and calmness he had exhibited his entire life.
Rex was born in Kitchener, Ontario on June 3rd, 1923. Following high school, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy in the Battle of the Atlantic from 1942 until the spring of 1945. In the fall of 1945 he enrolled at the University of British Columbia graduating from Civil Engineering in 1950. More importantly, the UBC campus was where he met Mary Eleanor McTavish, his future wife of 64 years.
Rex is survived by his four children and their spouses, Paul Heeney and Joanne Moser, Adam and Maureen Heeney, Martha and Glenn Robinson and Kate and Collin Clinton, as well as four grandchildren, Julia, Hannah, Mary and Hamish. Also missing Rex is his sister Alice and family, as well as many friends across Canada and in the United States. He was predeceased by the love of his life Mary in 2012 and his brother Byng in 1976.
Rex had the logical mind of his fellow professional engineers, the language skills of a grammarian, an unparalleled sense of humour and the patience of Job. He made friends easily, whether on the golf course or travelling the globe.

The family would also like to acknowledge the excellent care Rex received over the years from Dr. Gilbert and from Dr. Seymour and the nursing staff on the third floor of Cowichan District Hospital during his last days.
