Michael passed away at home at the age of 81, with family by his side, after a year of failing health. In late October he said he was “just hanging on to see the results of the [US] election”, and he was true to his word.

After leaving Victoria High School in 1953, Mike joined the RCAF and was stationed in Clinton ON, Tofino BC, and Zweibrücken, Germany. He then worked for a short time on the DEW Line at Cape Parry NWT, before starting his career with External Affairs. He was posted first to the UK, then Moscow; Warsaw, and was in Beijing for Pierre and Margaret Trudeau’s visit. In 1976 Mike accepted a position with Transport Canada and moved to Delta, BC. After retiring, he came back to the Island, finally settling in Crofton. Mike had many interests, could build or fix almost anything, enjoyed learning, teaching, talking and joking, loved all creatures, and was always ready to help. The legacy of parents is found in the qualities they instill in their children. Dad gave us the gifts of critical thinking, open-mindedness, love of music and world culture. We also got his sense of humour. Predeceased by parents Eric and Zoe Foster, and sister Kathleen; he will be missed by us, his daughters Monica and Georgia, former wife Elvira, and special friend Joan. The family thanks Cowichan Home Support, Home and Community Care Nursing, Dr. Postuk, the Jubilee Hospital 6North team, and friend Rick. Mike never liked being fussed over, but he’s not here to stop us, so we’re having a Celebration of Life at the Duncan Showroom 131 Station St., Duncan on Sunday Dec 4, 2016 from 1-4pm.
