On Friday, June 24, 2016, Shirley Elizabeth Common came to the end of her journey in this life. Born on April 8, 1931 in Victoria, BC, she died on June 24, 2016 in Duncan, BC.

Predeceased by her father Rev. John Hayhurst in 1963, her mother Norma Hayhurst (nee: Cross) in 1998, her only sibling Lillian Bernice (“Bunny”) Snideman in 2010 and by her husband Brian Joseph Common in 2006.

She leaves behind her brother-in-law, David Snideman and his four daughters: Diana (Bauke), Alisa (Fred), Kristina (Mark) all of Alberta; Rosemarie (Frank) of Penticton, BC. Also David’s grandson, Christopher (Natalie), two granddaughters: Jennifer (James) and Danielle (Mike) and two great-grandchildren: Justice and Abigail.

Elizabeth and Brian spent 18 years at Easter Seal House in Vancouver providing a warm and welcoming “home away from home” for the many families from throughout BC who had to bring their children to Vancouver for medical care. After retiring, they spent several years in Vancouver before choosing to move to Duncan in 1998. They loved the Cowichan Valley and its friendly folk.

Sincere thanks to Dr. L. Jackson for her understanding and care of Elizabeth since she moved here. Special thanks to Lois Hurst, also to St. Edward’s Parish Family for their care and help; especially Gloria Ganter and Ron and Edie Bonar. Also to the staff of Abbeyfield House for their loving support and consideration during the seven years Elizabeth lived there. It was a home she loved. And to Larry Myhre for his unfailing kindness and guidance after Brian died, it was invaluable and much appreciated.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edward’s Church, 2085 Maple Bay Road, Duncan, BC with Fr. Luyen Dau, C.S.s.R. and Fr. Alfredo Monacelli officiating. Interment of Ashes at Mountain View Cemetery will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Elizabeth suggests you might visit someone who is lonely or sick in hospital or at home, take them a flower, give them a hug and assure them that they are loved by God.
