Sophy Whittaker

Sophy passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 29, 2016 after a lengthy stay at Cerwydden Lodge in Duncan, BC.

Born on August 29, 1923 in Liverpool, England, the second daughter of Capt. David and Veronica Lloyd. Mom was of Welsh descent and remained a proud Welshwoman to the end. She moved with her Mother to Cowichan in 1940. For a short time she joined the war effort as a riveter in the Boeing Aircraft Factory in Vancouver. She married Edwin Whittaker in 1944.

She was pre-deceased by her husband in 2003 and her sister Veronica in England. She is survived by her son Chris and daughter-in-law Peggy, Ruth and son-in-law Gerry Hawkes, Andy and daughter-in-law Pam, Benn, and Lucy and son-in-law Ron Meyer. She will also be missed by 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Mum lived on the family farm all her married years until going into a care home. She was always a hard worker, looking after her kids, livestock, chickens and gardening in the summertime. Mum enjoyed her flowers, her grandchildren and a nice cup of tea with her book and her cat by her side.

In the early years she enjoyed visiting with her father in the Chilcotin and later traveling on several occasions with her adult children to England and Europe.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cerwydden for their kind, gentle and thoughtful care and support of Sophy and the family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Cowichan Golf Club on June 11, 2016 from 2 to 5 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Cowichan District Hospital Foundation or the SPCA.
