What are the limits to growth?

I, too, have wondered about the same water concerns as Mr. Manners has expressed in his letter to the editor in the March 14, issue.

With the various political entities in the Cowichan Valley I am concerned that they are each allowing more and more development without someone actually adding up the water that will be required for the increased population. Think of all the toilets! Even if they are all low flush, can our present sewer system manage to cope?

Of course, water to residential buildings is only part of the problem. Farmers need water for food production, industry, fish habitat, and fire all need certain amounts often in the same dry summer time of the year.

Like Mr. Manners, I would ask for reassurance that the planners would look at the valley wide water availability and do the math! Many years ago people talked about limits to growth — what are the limits to growth in the Cowichan Valley?
