N. Cowichan should leave climate change to CVRD

I oppose North Cowichan hiring an environmental manager.

The atmosphere and the environment are a global issue. It is best handled at the regional CVRD level. The CVRD already has a regional economic development department because it was thought that a regional approach makes the most sense. Recently, a water service, and an affordable housing function were added to the responsibilities of the CVRD because it was deemed that a regional response was the only realistic approach. Clearly, the environment has the same attributes for regional oversight.

The CVRD already has a manager for the environment. North Cowichan should not duplicate a function that already exists at the regional CVRD level. That would be terribly wasteful spending of our taxes.

The solution is simple. Seeing how North Cowichan pays the lions’s share of the administrative costs for the CVRD, I think that North Cowichan council, via its directors appointed to the CVRD, should ask the CVRD to contribute more of an effort to solve the climate issues facing us because they already have the department to deal with it.
