Take boating safety seriously

It continues to amaze me that in our community with so much activity on the ocean and the lakes that we still hear about a near miss or serious accidents involving people without life jackets.

The latest one just baffles me. How could two “responsible adults” take two small children out in a boat and not wear a life jacket themselves?

This was by any definition not an accident, this was a serious issue of putting children at risk due to adult behaviour. When will it stop? Maybe these two “responsible adults” have learned and will wear life jackets in the future. They were indeed very lucky and get a second chance.

There is no way to call the above incident an accident. It can be called anything — careless, irresponsible actions anything else — but not an accident. It was the perfect setup for failure. No safety professional in their right mind would classify it as an accident.
