We are all in this together

In a letter to the editor, John A. MacDonald suggests that Canadian “laws” do not apply to Indigenous people and as a result they own Canada. “First Nations own their lands”.

What in heaven’s name is he suggesting? Anyone born as offspring of colonials have no right to our property? Should we all pack up and leave? With a name like “MacDonald” is he prepared to vacate his property and move back to Scotland?

If we move, are the Indigenous people prepared to compensate us for our part of building this great nation into what it is today?

The fact is, we don’t need this type of dialogue at this critical time in Canadian history. We are all in this together, offspring of colonials and Indigenous folk, and fewer letters like MacDonald’s would be a great start.
