Two wins for the Law and a loss for Blue Steel Brew helped set up a tight battle for second place in the Cowichan Women’s Football League at the midway point of the 2017 season.
The Law beat the Ravens 20-0 on Friday night and the Storm 33-14 on Sunday, and BSB lost 35-6 to the Crew on Sunday as the teams both moved to 3-2 on the season, tied for second behind the 5-0 Crew.
In the Friday game, the Law got two touchdowns from Wendy Charles and one from Toni Williams, and converts from Charles and Leanne Closson, while on defence, Rachel Hastings and Tanya Green had two sacks apiece and Pattie Atkinson had two interceptions and Nicki Flynn and Jaimie Olson had one each. The Ravens lost a player to injury early on, but soldiered on and managed to finish the game.
On Sunday, the Law picked up right where they left off to beat the Storm. Caitlin Evans scored both touchdowns for the Storm, with extra points from Alyssa and Shylayne Davidson.
BSB meanwhile, fell to 3-2 on the year with their loss to the Crew. Quarterback Michelle Nederlof had BSB’s lone touchdown, while Kirbee Crisp had a sack and Kara Olson recorded an interception. The Crew got two touchdowns from Jennie Hittinger, one from Kathleen Owens, one from Jessica Lines and one from Janelle Mould on a pick-six. Marilou Sullivan had one- and two-point converts and an interception, Owens and Kerynne Bains had single-point converts, and Nenagh McCulloch led the defence with four sacks.
In the other Sunday match, the Wild topped the Ravens 20-13. Rookie Ashley Bond led the Wild with three interceptions, running one back for a touchdown, while Sue Glenn and Piper Doerksen also scored. Glenn also contributed a one-point rouge and Val Chambers had a convert. The Ravens got touchdowns from Lonnie-Lee Peter and Leah McCormick. Peter also chipped in a convert.
