For the fifth year in a row, all-star linebacker Adam Bighill led the way at the Cowichan Football Spring Development Camp at McAdam Park on March 18 and 19.

The camp for players between the ages of eight and 14 attracted 65 attendees from all over the Island, with a few coming from the Mainland for two days of fundamentals with more than 20 coaches, including staff from the Westshore Rebels and VI Raiders junior clubs as well as multiple Island minor football associations, including the Cowichan Bulldogs.

“It is a great camp for those who are new to the sport and want to try it out as it gives all the players a chance to try out all the positions,” camp director Devon Lawrence said. “But is also good for seasoned veterans who can focus on their position and learn from different coaches.”

The camp is beneficial for the coaches as well as the players, Lawrence noted.

“Not only do we coach the players, but working together we coach each other,” he said. “With the help of other volunteers from Cowichan Football, the players are able to have a fun filled weekend of football.”

Bighill is the big draw. The four-time CFL all-star and 2015 Most Outstanding Defensive Player with the BC Lions signed with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints in January, but still made time for the Cowichan camp.

“Adam is always a huge hit with the players,” Lawrence said. “He is awesome at getting the players pumped up and excited to play football. Having Adam at the camp also gives the players a chance to learn from one of the best football players in the sport.

“Adam also shared the Sportcore training system with the players which doesn’t just make them a better football player, but a better athlete overall.”

The camp wrapped up with full-contact offence-vs.-defence junior and senior games, giving the players a chance to put their new knowledge to the test in real game situations.

Bighill has vowed to return in 2018, with a season of NFL experience under his belt.

“Adam was very pleased with the effort and participation that he saw from all the players and is excited to come back next year,” Lawrence said.

The Bulldogs’ spring season began last weekend and registration is still open. Visit cowichanfootball.com for information.
