Cross country siblings show well at provincials

Fresh off their impressive finishes at the Island high school cross country running championships, Brentwood College School runners Keaton and Madison Heisterman added strong showings at the provincial championships last weekend.

Fresh off their impressive finishes at the Island high school cross country running championships, Brentwood College School runners Keaton and Madison Heisterman added strong showings at the provincial championships last weekend.

Keaton Heisterman, who won the Island junior boys title in Victoria in late October, finished second in the provincial junior boys race, his 17:35 just nine seconds back of winner Matti Erickson from Nelson’s L.V. Rogers Secondary.

Madison Heisterman, who was second in the Island senior girls race, finished sixth in the province with a time of 17:48, 47 seconds behind Oak Bay’s Justine Stecko, who also won gold in the Island race.

Joining Keaton in the junior boys race were his Brentwood teammates Hugh Rimmer (18:27, 24th overall), Jack Napier-Ganley (19:55, 115th overall) and Callum Blake-Currier (20:00, 123rd overall), as Brentwood finished sixth in the team standings. A total of 271 runners entered the junior boys race.

Madison Heisterman was the lone runner from a Cowichan Valley school in the senior girls race, which had 242 total entries.

Cowichan Secondary’s Jessica Castle, who won gold in the junior girls race at the Island championships, placed 20th of 249 runners at provincials with a time of 19:29. Frances Kelsey’s Caitlin Burdett was 102nd with a time of 21:01.

Ori Blake-Currier of Brentwood ran the senior boys race in 26:52 to place 83rd out of 233 runners.
