Fitness community lacing up for Poppy fundraiser

Members of Cowichan Valley’s athletic community have organized a fitness fundraiser for young Poppy White and her family.

Members of Cowichan Valley’s athletic community have organized a fitness fundraiser for young Poppy White and her family.

Just a week before her 11th birthday, Poppy was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The White family is well known in the soccer, track and field and 4-H communities and fundraisers have been popping up in support ever since news broke of of Poppy’s battle.

On Saturday, July 22 at 10 a.m. instructors from the Cowichan Aquatic Centre are gathering to lead “Fit and Healthy for Poppy”, a family-friendly bootcamp-style workout.

The entry fee is by donation to the White family.

“Folks can come out and get a good workout in and at the same time help support Poppy and her family,” said Paula Dunford, one of the organizers.

People of all fitness levels are welcome to join the hour-long workout at at the Sherman Road soccer fields, which have been offered up by the Cowichan Valley Soccer Association.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, running shoes and to bring water and enthusiasm.

“Come out and be strong for a family who will need strength and support to get through the next few years,” Dunford said.
