A goalie who played briefly with the junior A Cowichan Valley Capitals died in a car accident last weekend.

Michael Doan, 25, died in a single-vehicle accident in Rochester, Minnesota around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday after attending a friend’s wedding.

The native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. started the 2011-12 season with the Caps, coming west as a 20-year-old after two seasons in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. After Derek Dun secured the starting job in training camp, Doan’s playing time was limited and he went back to Ontario after just four appearances with the Caps, playing the rest of the season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League.

He spent the following three years at Northern Michigan University, then one year at the University of Windsor before going pro last year with the Knoxville Ice Bears and Evansville Thunderbolts.
