Nearly 400 athletes from across Vancouver Island gathered at the Cowichan Sportsplex earlier this month for the 2017 Garriock Track and Field Meet hosted by the CVAC Jaguars.
“We had 397 registered athletes for our very successful meet,” club spokesperson Candace Fontana said.
The impressive results posted by the host club included a slew of medals: 43 gold, 38 silver and 28 bronze in individual events.
Among the top performers for the Jaguars was Alexa Dow, who finished first in the 10-year-old girls 100m, 600m and 1000m, second in javelin and third in long jump. Just three weeks earlier at the Elwood Wylie Meet in Nanaimo, Dow broke the provincial record for her age group in the 1000m, finishing in three minutes and 23.02 seconds, more than a second better than the old mark of 3:24.04.

Several local businesses stepped up to help make the event a success, Fontana noted.
“We couldn’t have done it without the great support from our sponsors who went the extra ‘lap’ this year to support our event,” she said.
Sponsors included Thrifty Foods and Thrifty Pharmacy, Grimm’s Meats, Saputo Dairy Products, Island Bakery, M&M Meats, Frito-Lay, Bulk Barn and Sysco. The club also acknowledged Will Arnold of Experience Cycling for lending tents and Darcy Mayo of 3D Electrical Services for helping set up the hammer cage with his bucket truck.
