The Cowichan Outlaws started to get the Lower Island Women’s Soccer association season back on track as they played to a scoreless draw with Fernwood City on the grass field at Victoria High last Sunday.

Cowichan head coach Neall Rowlings described the pitch as “choppy,” but felt his team did a good job of adapting.

“Our girls moved the ball very well,” he said.

Kerynne Bain stepped between the pipes for the Outlaws and recorded the shutout. Rowlings was pleased with the team effort.

“The girls seem re-energized and committed, so now if we stick to the basics we will start to earn results soon,” he said.

The Outlaws will play host to Vic West this Sunday at noon in the last game of the first half of the Div. 2 season.

The Over 30A Cowichan Cougars lost 5-0 to second-place Gorge at Hampton Park on Saturday. Gorge led 4-0 at halftime and added one more in the second half.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game going in,” coach Darian Achurch said. “We were missing a few players due to injuries and other commitments, and it is never easy facing Gorge in their park.”

The Cougars were already missing Ali Garnett due to a rib injury from the previous match, then they lost Claudette Grimshaw just two minutes into the game after she tried to play on an injured Achilles tendon. They still managed to create a few scoring chances, particularly in the second half.

“The second half was way better,” forward Caryn Taylor said. “We settled down and played better soccer. Hopefully next week we can keep that momentum going.”

The Cougars will face Prospect Lake at PISE this Friday night in a battle for third place.
