The Duncan RiverCats beat Central Saanich in back-to-back games to finish first out six teams at the U12B district softball championships held at Evans Park late last month.

The RiverCats defeated Carnarvon 16-9 in their first game at the tournament, then got by Central Saanich 9-6 to earn a berth in the final. Central Saanich battled their way back into the final as well, setting up a rematch that Duncan won 9-7.

“Everyone stepped up, especially in the 30 C heat,” Duncan coach Darrin St. Amand said. “We competed in the B level this season and had a couple girls brand-new to ball, another came up from U10 and one that came over from baseball. We weren’t sure what to expect of the team, and as coaches we set a goal of competing every game. The girls played well from the start and gained confidence throughout the season.”

As district champs, the RiverCats will head to the provincial tournament in Maple Ridge on July 13-16, with a few exhibition games scheduled between now and then.
