An injured player filled in for the Cowichan Cougars’ coach last Friday and guided the team to victory.

Sidelined for the Cougars’ Lower Island Women’s Soccer League Over 30A match against Juan de Fuca at Royal Bay Secondary, Claudette Crisp opted to go behind the bench in place of head coach Darian Achurch, with positive results as Cowichan prevailed 1-0.

The Cougars had several corner-kick opportunities during the evenly matched game, but their lone goal was scored on a shot by Stacey de Lusignan. Alita Mattin filled in between the goalposts and was perfect when called on. The rest of the defence played well to preserve the shutout.

Cowichan’s Div. 2 women’s team played to a 3-0 loss against Gorge at Hampton Park on Sunday afternoon. The teams played an even battle for the first half despite Cowichan being down a player.

“We played a very strong defence, and with a lot of play between both ends, we were able to hold them scoreless with very few shots,” co-coach Darbi Aitchison said.

Gorge took over early in the second half, putting three quick goals over the head of Cowichan goalkeeper Kelsey McKernan.

“We were able to get back our defensive strength,” Aitchison said. “But not able to even the score.”

The Div. 2 team hosts Vic West this Friday at 8 p.m. on the Sherman Road turf, and the Cougars host Castaways on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Evans Park.
