Six 11th graders have thrown their hats into the ring to become the 2022 Lady of the Lake.
Those brave and confident young women include: Roselyn Baird - sponsored by Countrywide Village Realty Ltd., Danielle Bissett - Royal Canadian Legion Br. 210, Jenae Weir - Lake Cowichan Kin, Sarah Brown - Ed’s Coffeehouse, Elise Nelson - A&W and Sunny Dalman - RE/MAX Generation.
Jocelyn Lundberg, who organizes the Lady of the Lake ambassador program aimed at “supporting the growth, education, and confidence of Cowichan Lake’s young women,” said it’s good to be back in person.
“We did run the program last year but of course it was entirely virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said. “It will be great for the candidates and community to return to in-person events!”
The candidates had until the end of February to register for the program which began in early March.
Thus far, among other events, the 2022 candidates have taken part in a Princess Movie night on April 22 at the LCS theatre to raise money for the Duck Pond Revitalization Project in memory of a former Lady of the Lake, Kristal Mayo. The candidates also held a bottle drive on May 7 to raise money for the Lady of the Lake program.
The group of six also attend weekly Toastmasters meetings where they develop their public speaking skills and work on their speeches for the pageant week events and have done a workshop with WorkBC where they learned valuable interview skills.
They’re keen for more events and activities, particularly during the big week in June — pageant week. But first the current reigning royalty team has some more events to attend.
“Our current reigning royalty team is headed to Trail [last] weekend to represent the Cowichan Lake communities, and they will be in the Victoria Day Parade on May 23 in Victoria,” Lundberg said. “We are looking forward to the in-person events in June during pageant week.”
Pageant week kicks off on June 8 with opportunity night. The doors at Centennial Hall will open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. start. Admission is $5 at the door.
Pageant night, also at Centennial Hall, will be on June 10. Again, the doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a 6 p.m. start. Tickets are $25 and available in advance at Dot’s Footwear beginning May 16.
The awards and crowning ceremony will be on June 11 at 2 p.m. It is an outdoor public event at the Central Park Bandshell.
