After two years of virtual events, the folks organizing the Cobble Hill Fair are ready and counting the days until the 113th edition is back in action in South Cowichan.
“We’re all so looking forward to the Cobble Hill Fair this year. It will be wonderful to get out and meet our friends and neighbours again at the fair,” said Cobble Hill Farmers Institute president Roger Painter in the official program. “The coronavirus may never be fully gone from our lives, but we are now at the point where we can look forward to some sort of normalcy after a long tough two and a half years.”
The annual celebration of South Cowichan’s agricultural roots is taking place from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 27 at Cobble Hill Common. With so much to see and do it’s hard to know where to start.
Fuel up first with Rotary’s pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Follow that up with a visit to the Vendor Village and by 9 a.m. the exhibits will be open at the hall. The parade begins at 9:15 a.m. and will be followed by the event’s official opening at 10 a.m. For the littles in your life, the Kids Zone also opens at 10 a.m.
It’s easy to build up an appetite at the fair so lunch in the hall begins at 11:30 a.m. Food vendors will also be on hand to cater to your cravings for the duration of the event.
The scarecrow competitions kick off at 1 p.m. and if magic is more your style, be sure to check out Donald Dunphy’s Magic Shows, which run at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Kids Zone.
Music on the stage runs most of the day and will feature Ed Peekeekoot (10:30 a.m.), Copper Canyon (11:45 a.m.), Porter Brothers (1 p.m.), Pony Club (2:15 p.m.), and Jack Connolly & guests (3:30 p.m.).
There are so many things to explore that aren’t scheduled as well, from pony rides and carriage driving to blacksmith demonstrations, dog agility, vintage machinery, 4-H demonstrations, balloon twisting and so much more.
“After the last two years of COVID restrictions, I hope you take the opportunity to get out of the house and mix and mingle with your friends and neighbours,” said 2022 fair chair Blair Herbert in the program. “We hope you enjoy your day.”
