Coming up in Cowichan: Painters featured, marbled murrelets, win Laketown Ranch performance

Enter to win a chance to perform on stage at Sunfest, or Nickelback concert

Two painters will take centre stage in the windows of Imagine That! gallery in downtown Duncan in April.

Bev Robertson will be featured in one with her work in oil and acrylic. She has been painting professionally since 2012.

"For her, painting is a way to capture the beauty of nature," said a press release. "While she paints many subjects, she has found that painting flowers is her true love.

"She finds inspiration in colours and textures, such as the ruffles of a peony, the veining in a rose petal, or how the petals of a dahlia cup each other and increase in size as they spiral out from the centre. For her, there is magic in capturing the light that glows on a flower or shines on the glass jar that holds them."

The other window will feature Cheryl Painter, who has dubbed her display "Welcome To My World".

Painter was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley. She attended the University of Victoria and the Victoria College of Art, then got a diploma in graphic design from Capilano College.

"After a successful career in that field, Cheryl focused on raising a family," said the release. "During that endeavour, she would resume what would ultimately be her calling — painting. Amidst the Cowichan Valley’s pristine beauty, she is constantly inspired by her surroundings."

Next up in the Cowichan Watershed Board/VIU-Cowichan Speaker Series is Bernard Schroeder with "Marbled Murrelets: Speedy Seabirds of the Rainforest" on Monday, April 14.

"Bernard will share his knowledge about these fascinating seabirds who fly deep into our local watersheds to nest in mossy branches of old growth forests, as well as other night flyers in British Columbia," said a press release for the event.

Schroeder is a wildlife and environmental consultant with extensive experience conducting wildlife research and monitoring in Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. He's done many nesting behaviour studies, habitat assessments and nest searches. Schroeder has used ornithological radar since 1998 for monitoring spatial and temporal movements of commuting marbled murrelets and nocturnally migrating birds.

The event takes place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Island University campus in Cowichan in Lecture Hall 140. It is free to attend.
