Cowichan Valley Open Learning Co-op’s Gavin Wright and Cowichan Secondary’s Saskia Kelly — both graduating this year — were awarded with Beedie Luminaries scholarships of up to $40,000.
The Beedie Luminaries program seeks out students who have not only demonstrated strong academic readiness, but who are also engaged in the world around them and have taken on life challenges and adversity with determination and optimism.
These scholarships recognize students’ resilience and resolve while easing the financial pressure associated with post-secondary studies.

Queen Margaret’s School’s Mario Moutou received a Silver level Duke of Edinburgh Award from Lieutenant Governor of B.C. Janet Austin during a virtual ceremony on June 10.
To earn the Silver Award, the achievers must work actively in the four sections of the award program: community service, development of a skill, physical recreation, and an adventurous journey in nature, working consistently over a minimum of 26 weeks. The award is presented to the achievers in the form of a lapel pin and a certificate. Achievers also earn two Grade 11 high school credits for completing their silver award.
