Cowichan’s 4-H community galloping along

There’s lots going on in Cowichan’s 4-H community these days, including the 4-H Gator Lottery and a massive scavenger hunt.

There’s lots going on in Cowichan’s 4-H community these days, including the 4-H Gator Lottery and a massive scavenger hunt.

One of the many winners of the province-wide lottery was Duncan’s Evelyn Thomas, who won $2,500 in Save on Foods gift cards.

She wasn’t the region’s only winner. Each year 4-H BC also gifts one 4-H club in the province a $1,000 prize for whichever club has the most tickets sold and for the second year in a row, that club was the Cowichan 4-H Holstein Club.

“Both the Cowichan 4-H Holstein Club and Cowichan 4-H Small Engines club would like to thank everyone in the Cowichan Valley who purchases a ticket, or multiple tickets, or shared their posts,” Michelle Laszczyk, leader of the Cowichan 4-H Holstein Club.

“They could have not achieved this prize without the amazing support from their local community.”

Also, recently 4-H members from across the Cowichan Valley participated in a scavenger hunt called the “4-H Road Rally” which took them all around the region.

Joined by their club leaders, members ranging in ages from 6-19 years hunted for various items on a list. They took selfies outside of local businesses, in front of road signs, amongst other things to learn more about agriculture in a fun way.

“They were tasked with locating different agriculture related items like ‘a lamb with a tail’, or ‘a horse in a field’, their favorite farm stand, a silo, or even locating three dairy farm signs,” Laszczyk explained.

“The most fun was a picture board that was hidden somewhere at the end of a cul-de-sac somewhere in the Cowichan Valley for a week, that only participants had the location clue to. Did you see it out and about?”

At the end of their adventure all participants received a prize donated either by the Cowichan Cobble Hill 4-H district, or from a local sponsor. Buckerfield’s generously donated several gift certificates, and Agrifoods International Cooperative Inc. donated chocolate milk for each participant.
