Deaf pastor Markus Jarva, who preaches to the masses in American Sign Language at Rest & Talk's Deaf Home, presents an ASL version of the film titled Jesus at Duncan's non-denominational Oasis City Church on May 24.
Jesus was produced by Deaf Mission in the United States, and will include subtitles for those who do not know ASL, or are just in the process of learning it.
"This film has made a significant impact on the deaf community in North America, as it facilitates a more accessible understanding of the story within the context of their language and culture," said Jarva. "By presenting the narrative in ASL, the movie enhances learning opportunities for the deaf community and fosters a deeper connection to their cultural identity."
Recent studies suggest that there may be approximately 200 or more deaf individuals residing on the Island, and 35 per cent of the population experience some level of hearing loss, placing them in the category of hard of hearing.
Jarva, and his wife Joy, who have both been deaf since birth, recently relocated to Duncan, from Ontario last fall. Joy founded the non-profit organization Rest & Talk and serves as its president. This has inspired Jarva to follow his own calling and establish a deaf home church on Vancouver Island. Rest & Talk offers various services, including counselling and coaching, along with a deaf home church where Jarva signs the gospel. The Jarvas are excited to announce plans for the Rapha Retreat Centre, which aims to support deaf and hard of hearing individuals in overcoming life challenges through biblical tools and wisdom.
"With Joy being more hard of hearing, We believe that this movie is crucial for the deaf and hard of hearing community in learning about the gospel of Jesus," said Jarva. "The film features a cast made entirely of deaf actors and actresses, which adds to its authenticity and impact. It is an incredible and impressive work that showcases the creativity behind its production while effectively sharing the message of the gospel."
The event will begin at Oasis City Church at 12:45 p.m., where attendees will have the option to purchase tickets either at the door or online at www.restandtalk.com/events. Each ticket includes the movie as well as a selection of salty and sweet snacks, pop, water, coffee, tea, and a sandwich — free parking will be available for all guests.
"This unique event creates more opportunities for building connections between the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities and hearing individuals," said Jarva. "By coming together, we can have a meaningful impact as we grow and work alongside one another. Most importantly, we can learn and grow with Jesus because Jesus loves everyone."
