The Cowichan Valley Regional District is offering several activities for families to do, free of charge on Family Day, Monday Feb. 17.

Duncan

The Cowichan Community Centre is the place to be from noon to 3 p.m. Staff there are partnering with Cowichan Tribes this year to offer a free Family Day celebration event. There’ll be crafts and activities for all ages in the Multi-purpose Hall. The fun will include beading key chains, storytelling, cedar rose-making, wool and spear-making demonstrations, futsal, face-painting and more.

What’s more, there are two free ice skating sessions being offered at the Big Stick: the first from noon until 1:10 p.m. and the second from 1:30 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. You can even spot some Cowichan Valley Capitals out to share the ice during those times too.

Mill Bay

If you can’t make it into Cowichan’s core, head over to Kerry Park Arena for their free Family Day skate which runs from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. or visit the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena for their 3:30 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. skate. Admission and skate rentals are free at both locations.

While you’re at Kerry Park Rec Centre check out their Family Day Learn to Curl event. It’s for families with children eight-years-old and up, but it’s free.

“Join us at the rink for a fun-filled session where you will learn about curling, be provided with equipment, and throw your first rock,” said South Cowichan Recreation spokesperson Janine Layseca.

Lake Cowichan and Youbou

If you’d rather stay out near Lake Cowichan, why not learn to move to beautiful dance music while building core muscles? There’s an all-ages Family Day Dance Demo event planned for 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena. You guess it, it’s free.

Rounding out the free fun on Family Day is bowling at Youbou Lanes. From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. celebrate with some old fashioned fun at the bowling ally. Admission and shoe rentals are complementary.

All of these activities are aided by support from the Province of British Columbia. More information is available at www.cvrd.bc.ca
