Did you know that pickleball was invented in Washington State by a fond father for his youngsters?

Meant to be easy enough for young and old alike to play, it has caught on quickly all over North America. There are an estimated 1,200 players on Vancouver Island alone from Port Hardy to Victoria, with 16 new outdoor courts under development for this summer. For more detail on where you can play visit the Vancouver Island Pickleball website at VIPA.ca.

Here in the Cowichan Lake area, we have over 60 active players, but due to the indoor courts being generally limited to weekday mornings, the majority of players are retired. With the pending improvements of the outdoor courts on Cowichan Avenue, (starting April 24 and hopefully complete by June 1) more folks of all ages will have better opportunity to participate. The courts are public, free to use, and everyone is welcome to come out and play.

Enthusiasm is high amongst the current players to share their love of the sport. It is hoped that in future, lessons for youth and families could be offered. Beginners welcome, so come on down!
