Remembering those who fought for country with Poppy Flag in Duncan

Following the ceremony cadets erected white crosses at Mountain View Cemetery

The cool rainy weather did not stop community members from gathering at Duncan City Hall at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27  alongside Legion members and cadets of all ages for the raising of the poppy flag, which marked the official kick off of the Poppy Campaign.

All money collected from this campaign throughout the Cowichan Valley will go directly to veterans and their families in need.

All in attendance on Sunday afternoon donned red poppies as they sang the national anthem in the falling rain. One of the young cadets read the poem In Flanders Fields while Duncan city Councillor Tom Duncan also said a few words before the annual raising of the flag, which was done with the assistance of a member of the bylaw department.

Following the flag raising, cadets met at Moutain View Cemetery and braved the finicky wet weather as they erected white crosses to remember and honour our Valley veterans.

There will be several Remembrance Day Services throughout Cowichan Valley on Nov. 11, including ones in Duncan, Lake Cowichan, Cobble Hill, and Chemainus.
