The Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department recently added a wildfire skid to their firefighting arsenal.
The new equipment comes courtesy of Global Medic, a Canadian charity dedicated to assisting vulnerable communities affected by disasters.
"In 2023 Global Medic recognized that wildfires can be a devastating disaster to small communities with limited resources, and in 2024 they worked with their sister agency, Global Fire, to create an immediate resolution to equipment and resource shortages," said Fire Chief Jeannine Caldbeck.
"The Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department took possession of a Global Medic Wildfire Skid at the end of August and it is now operational for quick response to wildfires in our community."
The skid, Caldbeck said, can be removed from the department's pickup truck during the winter months and stored to be ready for the next fire season.
"This is a valuable and much appreciated addition to fire suppression capabilities on Thetis Island," Caldbeck said.
