Two members of the local Royal Canadian Legion Branch 53 were honoured for their military service on March 20.

Married couple George and Lorraine Dickie were presented with Quilts of Valour at Duncan’s Hospice House by Lynn Carroll, a representative of the Quilts of Valour-Canada organization.

A Quilt of Valour is a hug from a grateful nation and a tribute to Canadian Armed Forces members, past or present, who have been injured.

George served 32 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, starting in 1945, and Lorraine served three years in the navy as a leading coordinator for the Women’s Royal Naval Service, which included cooks, clerks, wireless telegraphists, radar plotters, weapons analysts, range assessors, electricians and air mechanics.

To date, Quilts of Valour Canada has awarded more than 12,000 quilts to military members across Canada.

The quilts are made by caring individuals and groups across Canada who want to express thanks to military people who have been touched by war, and the ones presented to the Dickies were made by Diane Cassavant-Fill of YSAG Quilters in Shawnigan Lake, and Victoria’s Judi Porter.

“May the hugs sewn into these quilts give you comfort, strength and love,” Carroll said to the Dickies when presenting the quilts.

“Thank you for your service to Canada.”
