A pair of Cowichan volunteers has picked Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley to be the recipients of a little generosity.

In 2019, First West Credit Union and Island Savings celebrated community leadership by recognizing local volunteers, non-profit organizations and charities that are making meaningful contributions to their communities. Recommendations by individuals in many communities were received and 40 volunteers in British Columbia have been selected and are empowered to direct a $1,000 donation from First West Credit Union to a non-profit of their choice.

Ron and Shirley Hill of the Valley Seniors Organization were nominated and then selected as outstanding volunteers in the community to receive this Simple Generosity award. They have chosen the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley in appreciation of their kindness and caring shown to Shirley’s son.

Presently Ron is the retiring president and Shirley remains active as the kitchen coordinator as well as making all the desserts, and coordinates special events. One finds Ron at 6 a.m. every day except Sundays, prepping the kitchen as well. Under their stewardship of more than 17 years, the membership increased to more than 1,000 members these past two years, many more activities for the members were instituted, and the kitchen offers a wide menu of very reasonably priced meals, snacks and beverages. Effective communities and volunteers were encouraged with the result of a very active and happy place for seniors.

Both Ron and Shirley were awarded Life Memberships in the organization in appreciation of their work and devotion to the VSO. Their contribution has been outstanding. All new members are welcomed and encouraged to take part in the many activities which include carpet bowling, dancing, craft and carving groups, choirs, bands, card games, bus trips, bingo, pool, shuffleboard and special events. The centre has a library and monthly newsletter.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, a delegation representing the Duncan Centre Branch of Island Savings, and Wref O’Hara, their nominator were present at a simple ceremony, honouring Ron and Shirley during the September General meeting at the VSO.
