In celebration of 100 years of settlement for immigrants from India in Canada, the provincial government will be issuing a proclamation at a special event in Victoria on Monday, Dec. 9.

The event will be held at Victoria City Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Those interested should use the Pandora Street entrance to the building.

In 1919, men from India had been coming to Canada for many years already to work, however, women and children were not allowed into the country.

Following the First World War India began lobbying for the immigration ban to be lifted on women and children from India, who were, after all British subjects.

On Dec. 24, 1919, the Canadian government removed the ban and settlement of Indian families began.
