Arts Club Theatre brings two-man tour de force to Duncan in ‘Bed Breakfast”

A couple think they’ve found a home, but will it work out?

Live theatre returns to the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre on Friday, Nov. 8 when Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company presents Bed & Breakfast starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Montreal Gazette loved it, calling the show, “Full of charm and quiet humanity…delightful.”

The play is a rom-com tour de force by two actors, playwright/actor Mark Crawford as Brett and Paul Dunn as Drew.

According to Crawford’s own description, it’s a heartfelt comedy about being “out” in small town Canada.

“Brett and Drew want to move out of their tiny downtown condo and into a house, but they just lost their seventh bidding war in Toronto. When Brett’s beloved Aunt Maggie dies, he unexpectedly inherits the historic family home in a quiet little tourist town. Unhappy with their careers and frustrated by life in the fast-paced city, the couple decides to make the move and start up a B & B. But when the guys face friction in their new community, they discover the simple life is more complicated than they thought.

“With more than a few unexpected and hilarious plot-twists, we follow Brett and Drew over the course of one year — through the real estate rat race, renovation hell, a farcical opening weekend at their B & B, and encounters with small-town prejudice — all the way to their big decision: do they stay here or do they pack it all in?” he says in the promotional material.

Are there skeletons in the closet, or, after all, is it a place to call home?

With dozens of characters — male and female, young and old — all portrayed by the two men, Bed and Breakfast is great entertainment, bringing all the delight of live theatre by this acclaimed troupe to Duncan.

Crawford developed the show at the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, Ontario as part of the 2014 Playwrights’ Unit. When it premiered in August 2015, it broke box office records.

Since then, it has travelled all over Canada, including Montreal, Regina, Vancouver and the Blyth Festival in Ontario.

Tickets are $36 for adults, $28 for students with a few $5 eyeGO seats for speedy students with their cards willing to whip down to the Cowichan Ticket Centre in person. Otherwise, call 250-748-7529 to reserve.

Cowichan Theatregoers may save $6 on the Arts Club on Tour series. Purchase Bed & Breakfast with Kim’s Convenience on March 28, 2020 and save $6. Both shows $68 or individual at $36 and $38.
