A ballet inspired by Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, Phantom of the Opera, is coming to the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre April 21 starting at 7:30 p.m.

In a masterful transformation of this tragic tale, Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada has fashioned an original ballet production from this captivating story which evokes timeless themes and images of outcasts, love, and the power of obsession.

This gothic saga raises the bar with its visual details exquisitely portrayed with original choreography by Igor Dobrovolskiy.

Set to the music of Francis Poulenc, this unique interpretation features lush costumes created by Paul Daigle and an intriguing set design by Brian Perchaluk with Pierre Lavoie’s ethereal mix of light and shadows that perfectly captures the eerie world.

The harrowing story unfolds in the surreal world of Erik the Phantom’s tortured imagination and evolves into the reality of his exile.

Rejected by the only world he knows, Erik hides a romantic heart and a sensitive soul but driven by a hopeless love, he becomes a menacing spectre, inhabiting a sinister domain of his own creation as a love triangle ensnares between the brilliant recluse, his beautiful ingénue whom he loves and the dashing young viscount who wins her heart.

The dancers are: Sergiy Diyanov (Erik), Yuriko Minami, Kosta Voynov, Evelina Sushko, Louis-Philippe Dionne, Anya Nesvitaylo, Aleksandr Onyshenko, Anton Lykhanov, Jennifer Mendoza, Olena Zakharova

Tickets are $37 each. Get them from cowichanpac.ca or by calling 250-748-7529.
