The recent pop-up drive-in movie at the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds was a big success.
Cowichan-area families had the chance to enjoy a safe night out while raising money for local charity Nourish Cowichan, and the event proved so popular that the original two-film slate from June 5 to June 7 turned into a four-film stop. Fresh Air Cinema partnered with FortisBC to bring the four family favourite flicks to Cowichan.
The events, which were free by donation, raised $3,380.88 from movie goers. Community fundraising partner Coastal Community Credit Union added $2,000 to the funds, for a grand total of $5,380.88. One hundred per cent of the money collected is going to Nourish Cowichan.
The locally based charity’s mission is to ensure every child is given the same opportunities to learn and succeed, by combating hunger with nutritious, locally produced food.
“Nourish Cowichan would like to thank Fortis BC and Coastal Community for bringing Fresh Air Cinema to the Cowichan Valley. Four sold out movies were shown on the beautiful grounds of the Cowichan Exhibition. It was heartwarming to see so many happy children with their families…many in pajamas,” said Deana Robertson, events director and board member for Nourish Cowichan. “With donations from those that attended and a matching $2,000 from Coastal Community, more than $5,000 was raised for Nourish Cowichan. This massive donation will be directed to the ongoing COVID-19 response. During this pandemic Nourish Cowichan is providing weekly food hampers to almost 500 families.”
Fresh Air Cinema has been bringing movies under the stars to outdoor locations across B.C. for 15 years. The format was adjusted this year to make sure it aligns with the current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines set by health authorities. Among other measures, attendance was limited to 50 vehicles and people were encouraged to stay in their cars unless visiting the restrooms.
