Local groups are holding down the fort at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre in May. From dance to music to musicals, there will be plenty of local talent on display.
First up on May 5 and 6 is Chalkboard Theatre with their production of Anne of Green Gables - The Musical.
There’s an evening and a matinee show of this popular Canadian tale, with tickets going for $18.

Then on May 11 Queen Margaret’s School presents TV Themes Through Time and Space.
“TV theme music can transport each of us to special moments in our lives,” said a press release for the show. “Allow the QMS music program to take you on a personal journey through the decades as they explore the beauty and thrill of some of our favourite shows such as The Crown, Westworld, Dr. Who, The Pink Panther, Outlander, Fame, Family Guy, The Mandalorian and more.”
The concert will be directed by Alison Hounsome.
Tickets are $15. The show starts at 6:30 p.m.

On May 13 the pros take over the big screen with The Met Opera: Der Rosenkavalier.
Starting at 9 a.m. “a dream cast assembles for Strauss’s grand Viennese comedy,” said a press release for the show.
Soprano Lise Davidsen is the aging Marschallin, with mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as her lover Octavian and soprano Erin Morley as Sophie, the younger woman who steals Octavian’s heart.
Tickets are $35 for adults, $32 for seniors, and $5 for students in grades 8-12.

On May 26 locals again take the stage as Steps Ahead Dance present their show Red.
The dance school offers their year-end show with performances in a variety of genres by dancers of all ages.
The May 26 show starts at 5:30 p.m. and there is a matinee the following day on May 27 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $30.

Then on May 28 at 4 p.m another local dance school takes to the big stage in the Warmland 2023 Showcase put on by Warmland Dance.
This show is their year-end celebration and will feature student performances across all genres and ages.
Tickets are $28 for adults, $22 for seniors and $18 for students.

The month wraps up with the Reel Alternatives presentation of Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On, scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m.
Reel Alternatives is a fundraiser for Cowichan Hospice that presents critically acclaimed films on the big screen at CPAC.
“The life, music, and activism of legendary Indigenous singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie are explored in this documentary that is as captivating as its subject, who smashed through barriers to become an inspiration to fans and fellow musicians alike,” says a press release for the film.
There is a content advisory for the film as there are themes of abuse and addiction that may not be suitable for all ages.
The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $17.
