Multi-talented Saltspring Island songstress Sue Newman brings her high-energy song-and-dance act back to the Crofton Hotel Pub on Sunday, June 4.

Along with her hot backup band — with saxophonist Monik Nordine, guitarist Peter Taschuk, bassist Ian Van Wyck and drummer Laurent Boucher — this performer will again explore the jazz standards and Broadway favourites that had her audience laughing, clapping, toe-tapping, dancing and cheering during previous performances at the pub.

Newman grew up in a musical household with jazz musician parents, touring Southern California with her siblings as a child variety act.

Since moving to Saltspring 35 years ago, she has taught ballet, tap and jazz dance, music, voice and theatre, and has produced, directed and choreographed extensively for a variety of productions in Vancouver and on Saltspring and Vancouver Island.

She has studied with jazz singers Jay Clayton and Sheila Jordan and performed with such artists as Hugh Fraser, Karel Roessingh and Valdy.

The weekly jazz series runs every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the pub, 1534 Joan Ave. in Crofton, a stone’s throw from the Saltspring Island ferry terminal. Musicians are invited to sit in during a jam session in the final hour.

Admission is $15. For information, call 250-324-2245.
