Sunset Cinema will be back at the Cowichan Sportsplex in July for a special movie under the stars.

Over the last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, this popular family event had gone drive-in, but this summer, sponsored by Coastal Community, this outdoor cinema experience is back.

“If you’re looking for a fun, free and family-friendly event, don’t miss the chance to watch a movie by the light of the stars,” said a press release for the event.

Sunset Cinema has dates in communities across Vancouver Island, with the Duncan event scheduled for Thursday, July 14. The film will be Sing 2.

There will be a concession at the film, and proceeds will go to support a local non-profit organization. The drive-in event last summer raised approximately $10,000 for the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.

“We were grateful we could pivot to drive-in movies when we needed to,” said Allyson Prescesky, senior manager, Community and Communications for Coastal Community. “But there’s something special about getting together in person that helps build community. We’re thrilled to be able to safely offer the big screen in parks across the Island this summer. It’s a great way for us to say thank you to Islanders for all their support.”

The film begins as soon as it gets dark, but people are advised to get there early to secure a good viewing spot. People should bring their own chairs, blankets and pillows.
