The Royal City Youth Ballet’s presentation of The Nutcracker returns to Duncan as the group celebrates its 30th season of this iconic ballet.

It’s just not Christmas without The Nutcracker, and for Valley folks, that means the Royal City Youth Ballet. This is the opportunity for parents and grandparents to take the kids, all dressed in their holiday finery, to see some real, live ballet.

Returning to the stage of the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre for two performances (Friday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m.) the students of the Royal City Youth Ballet and a few adult performers bring one of the world’s most beloved ballets to life.

It’s a treasured holiday classic, and has grown to become an annual tradition at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre for many families.

Set to authentic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s well-known music, including ‘Waltz of the Flowers’, ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ and ‘Waltz of the Snowflakes’, the story follows the journey of young Clara, who is given a Nutcracker doll as a Christmas gift by her mysterious godfather.

Clara dreams that her doll comes to life and he helps her defeat the evil Mouse King and his menacing mice minions. She then travels with her Nutcracker Prince to the spellbinding Land of Snow and Kingdom of Sweets, witnessing breathtaking magic along the way.

The Royal City Youth Ballet’s Nutcracker is a wonderful live performance that captures the imaginations of the audience year after year. It’s a magical experience filled with spectacular sets and exquisite costumes. It’s a performance the whole family will enjoy and is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season.
