Approximately 20 volunteer firefighters from the Mill Bay fire department helped put out a fire at the community's A&W restaurant on Aug. 7 that damaged the building.

The Mill Bay fire department was called to a fire at the community’s A&W restaurant on Deloume Road on the evening of Aug. 7 that damaged the building.

The department’s Facebook page said in a post that firefighters responded to a call just before 10:30 p.m. concerning the fire, and a firefighting crew, who were just wrapping up from their weekly Wednesday night practice, quickly responded.

When the first trucks arrived on scene, there was heavy smoke coming from the whole building, the Facebook post said.

Fire was observed in the back right corner of the building.

Teams entered the building to deal with the fire, which was located in the area where the customer bathrooms are situated, and then were challenged with finding access to the restaurant’s attic and other difficult void spaces until the fire was fully put out.

The Facebook post said damage from the fire was contained to the back corner of the restaurant where the bathrooms are located.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however it is not deemed to be suspicious at this time," the post said.

“Kudos to the A&W employees who were working that night who attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher and called 911. Without their early reporting, the building likely would have been a full loss.”

Approximately 20 volunteer firefighters were on scene to fight the fire, as well as a number of fire trucks and other equipment from the Mill Bay fire hall.

The Mill Bay A&W website said on Aug. 8 that the restaurant was temporarily closed.
