Duncan Elementary School celebrates its 100th anniversary this year but the major celebration will be held in April.
The school officially opened on Dec. 11, 1913 and in recognition of the school's centennial, a celebration is being planned for Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the historic building at 1033 Nagle St. A planning committee has been formed and is working on details for the celebration, which will include displays of artifacts, photographs and documentation, organized by quarter century.
"We hope that many past Duncan Elementary students and staff will be able to attend the 100th anniversary celebration on April 5 where they can renew and make new acquaintances and reminisce through the displays that will be set up in the school," said schools superintendent Joe Rhodes.
Bob Harper, secretary-treasurer for the Cowichan Valley School District, said that the celebration would be held in spring, when the weather was better and there was more time to organize it properly.
